Rice Terraces & Local Life

Distance: 10 km

Easy to Moderate

Walking Time: 6 hours

Starts at 9:00 AM

This one-day trek is the most direct version of the Rice Terraces route, focused on the main valley walk through Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai, and Ta Van. It follows rice terraces, village paths, and farmland in the Muong Hoa Valley, with time to see Black Hmong and Giay villages along the way. The landscape changes with the season, from green rice fields in summer to golden harvest colours later in the year.

Itinerary

Morning – Rice Terraces and Y Linh Ho Village
We meet at 9:00 AM in Sapa town and begin walking downhill toward Y Linh Ho, a Black Hmong village surrounded by some of the oldest rice terraces in the valley. This first section offers wide views across the hillsides and gives a clear sense of how farming and mountain life shape the landscape.

Late morning – Lao Chai Village
The route continues to Lao Chai, one of the oldest Hmong villages in the area. Depending on the season, you may see farmers working in the fields, buffaloes grazing, or women weaving and embroidering at home.

Lunch stop – Local restaurant
We stop for lunch at a local restaurant in Lao Chai before continuing through the valley.

Afternoon – Ta Van and the Muong Hoa River
After lunch, the walk continues toward Ta Van, a Giay village near the Muong Hoa River. This lower part of the valley feels calmer and more open, with rice paddies, river views, and a different rhythm from the upper villages.

Return to Sapa
In the afternoon, a taxi picks us up in Ta Van and takes us back to Sapa town.
